#RWRunStreak: Let's do this?

To streak or not to streak, that is the question.

I've long been outspoken against running streaks. I thought them unnecessary, at best, and risky at worst. Running seven days a week was sure to open one up to injuries, burnout and fatigue at a time when added stress is the last thing a person needs. (Kim had a great post about why not to streak last year!)

Yet, when Tami posted on her Facebook page that she was taking on the holiday challenge from Runner's World, I surprised myself by thinking about it. I think it was because she was putting her own spin on the streak — one didn't have to run every day but should do something every day from Thanksgiving to New Year's, whether it was cycling, yoga, PiYo, running or aerobics. I exercise six days a week out of habit so adding another day wouldn't be so bad. If anything, it might give me the incentive to incorporate the PT hip exercises I've been talking about for the past two weeks.

Note: I don't need to do the hip exercises but I've noticed the pregnancy hip spread, some general weakness and change in my gait. I think stronger hips could help the latter two.

I thought and thought about it but never made it official. I considered myself a silent observer/participant in the madness. I ran on Thursday but I would have done so anyhow. It was an arduous way to kick off whatever I was thinking about — 5 miles around the west side of Cincinnati during which I stopped on hills to catch my breath, curse the terrain, get frustrated with my watch that hadn't picked up satellites and bemoan my growing belly.

On Friday, my grandma kept Miles while Mark and I went to a cycling class at the Y. The class was OK but I felt bored through much of it even though I was working and liked the music. Had it not been rude, I would have chatted with Mark the whole time but instead, I found myself thinking about the streak.

"I could run one mile after class," the wheels turned. "It wouldn't be so bad." And so I did. I ran a mile on the treadmill after class while Mark did core work. The exercise once a day streak was looking to become a full-fledged #RWRunStreak.

I had planned to run both weekend days, logging 5 miles after we got home Saturday and doing 8 with my friend on Sunday.

Four days in and completely uncommitted, I was still streaking.

I figured today would be the test. If I ran today, I would do the streak. Yet, after logging a mile before teaching Rip because I had time, I'm feeling just as ambivalent as I had before. I can't put my finger on why but I am.

The pros:

  • It will help me keep up weekly mileage while dropping back some of my weekday runs.
  • It might be nice to have something positive to focus on during the holidays, which can often be a hard time for me.
  • It gives me a good reason to get out with Denali.

The cons:
  • I am not training for anything and haven't for some time. The idea of having to do something is not always fun.
  • I'm halfway through pregnancy and need to start thinking about if and when I need to cut back, even if it's just a smidge, Now is not the time to add things to my plate!
  • It's cold outside, and it seems silly to get all dressed up to run a mile.

I have a run date tomorrow, which will bring me to day 6, so the next test is Wednesday.

What are your thoughts? Are you streaking?

  1. Thanks for the shoutout!

Hee hee, I am curious to see what you do on Wednesday. I like the idea of the "being active" each day streak. And I think the 1-mile minimum streak can be really do-able and healthy. But... your heart has to be in it. Your con #1 is why I didn't care for the streak I did. But! That doesn't mean everyone has to feel that way! Good luck, whatever you decide! :)

    1. I agree on all accounts. We'll see tomorrow ... I do think the 5K a day was a lot more. It doesn't seem as such but it's 30 minutes versus 10.

  2. I've never been interested in doing the streak simply for the last reason you mentioned; It takes me much, much longer to get all dressed to go out than it does to run one mile. That's a ridiculous amount of work with some of the cold weather we've been having and I'd have to run at least three miles every day to make my running time equal my dressing/stretching/undressing time. Totally not worth it. I'd rather run less often and get in longer, better quality runs.

    1. I never thought of factoring in the time spent getting ready and cleaning up! A run streak would definitely be easier in the summer, time wise. I spend forever getting dressed now!

  3. No run streak for me. I can't justify getting all bundled up to only run one mile and most of the time, I'm one of those who's body does not do well with running every day. I am active most every day (except when I'm sick) so if I streak at all, that's it.

  4. I'm obviously pro-streak ... But I can totally understand the reasons for not streaking as well. It's actually enabling me to avoid Piyo ... I said I would count a workout in place of a mile, but instead I've gone the "easy" way out so far and ran a few 1-milers in the first week. So maybe I just struck down my own streak? Lol. I think I just need to suck it up and do the work I know is necessary to reach my own goals.

  5. I definitely like the idea of challenging yourself to be active every day. But I can't get on board with the actual run streak. It's not even bundling up to go outside. I've got a great treadmill in my basement, I just can't be bothered to change period. Even just three miles I feel like it's hardly worth the effort (#runnersnob). I've been wearing an UP24 band since summer and I find this much more motivating. Hitting that 10k steps per day is really hard on days I don't run. SO focusing on 10k per day for 30 days would be a good challenge for me.

    1. I love it! I will see how it comes to changing for just one mile. On Monday, I was already dressed for class so it was no big deal. It will be different on days where it's just the one mile.

I have to share that my grandma has become so accustomed to my mileage that she jokes with me if I run a 5K. "Is it worth it?" she will ask.

  6. I'm doing the streak, for the first time ever. I still have mixed feelings about it, but this year I ran four half marathons in six months and totally burned out after the last one (October). I didn't want to stop running completely so having the challenge of just doing one mile a day has been nice. I'm also doing it to keep a friend accountable who is trying to get into healthy habits. I live in Spain, so weather isn't an issue for me. :)
