Welcome to Healthy Strides. Thank you so much for stopping by.
I'm Kimberly. Or Kim. I really don't care what you call me - as long as it's something nice (or true). I'm married to a handsome guy, Mark, and I am mom to the most beautiful boy on the planet, Miles.
We also have a dog (of course). Denali is a 3-year-old Siberian husky that loves apples, snow and running.
I began this blog in 2010 as a way to follow my journey as I took off the last 10 pounds in my 120-pound weight loss journey and share my passion for running.
In 2010, I ran three half-marathons, a 16-mile trail race and a handful of smaller races.
And then I found out I was pregnant.
Since then, the blog has followed me as I worked to stay active and healthy during my pregnancy, the birth of Miles and my effort to get back into shape post-partum.
Healthy Strides is not a blog where I post my daily eats or the details of every workout; it is an avenue for me to share my life and keep me accountable as I work to maintain the life I created for myself. You'll find musings on workouts, training plans (including that of my first marathon!), thoughts on gear, the occasional recipe and photos of my loves.
Thank you for letting me share it with you.
Holy crap Kim. I haven't seen you since college. Congrats. First person I personally knew on Yahoo news. Tiffany S, Cleveland, OH
ReplyDeleteGood job on all of your hard work and dedication. Wishing you much continued success!
ReplyDeleteYour story is very inspiring. Thanks for sharing it!
ReplyDeleteI just saw your story on yahoo....I am 52 and need to do the same thing...more urgent is my 15 yr old son who is 5'10 and weighs 317. We need help. (I am 5'6 and 259) I am going to read your blog and start today to change...thanks for the testimony.
ReplyDeletestart by cutting out sugary, fizzy drinks. start moving/walking is good... set one goal at a time and do it together.. go shopping when you have eaten breakfast, ie when full not hungry, stay away from the sweets/biscuits area.. Buy lots of fresh food and cook from scratch, no ready made meals.
DeleteSnack on carrots, celery sticks etc.. but them , wash them and cut them up , place them in the fridge and when you have the nibbles have some of those and not chips.. one step at a time, start the 1st 2 weeks with just the drinks, then add no chips for eg.. eat plain popcrn insted(no butter) go from there.. best of luck to you and your son...
KIM I AM SO PROUD OF YOU! I just openned up YAHOO and there your beautiful face was! Congratulations girl!

You're very inspiring! I'm a teenager, and I'm struggling with weight myself, since I've been recently diagnosed with NAFLD. I'm tall for my age, so the unwanted extra pounds don't really affect my image... but, still. When the doctor says you're obese, then it must be true :(
ReplyDeleteBut reading your story put me in a better mood! Thank you!
Good luck to you and your beautiful family!
Saw this on yahoo news. I don't know you but I feel very proud of a fellow Fort Waynian being on yahoo news...and for something so positive! You go!
ReplyDeleteSo....so....proud of you! Just saw your story on Yahoo and had to check it out! I'm 63....oh, yes, I struggle with weight loss....got to get it under control....270 pounds, 5'2"...not good for me...morbidly obese. I have had 2 really good successes, one within the last year....Optifast...lost 60 pounds, but when I had the option of having 2 meals "added back," I guess I just felt a little "prissy." Began going out to eat....well, I'll have just ONE piece of bread....just a LITTLE dessert....gained it all back!!! The other time, I monitored what I ate (years ago!) at each meal, just using good common sense on portion size/how food prepared/eating varied foods/more nutritious foods....all that to say, I lost 50 pounds! So, today....yes, I will follow your wonderful journey....you have inspired me! Thank you! Again, I am very proud of all your successes! :)
ReplyDeleteKim: I read about you on Yahoo. I am struggling with weight loss after having major surgery and have been unable to exercise for almost a year. I was inspired by your story and your success! I now am allowed to start cardio exercise. I have started walking daily. I hope that I will be able to share my journey back to health with others.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the inspiration! Joanie

Hello, Kim I was inspired when I read you story. I've been battling with my weight for 11 years. I thank God I have a wonderful husband that loves me and appreciates me. This year I have decided that I want to become a leaner person. I just want to be completely healthy. My diet is great - I've learned all the cool good foods. I'm eating good portions now. I've lost 20 lbs. already, but have 50 to go. But, I can't seem to motivate myself enough to exercise. How did you motivate in the beginning?

WOW! what a great story...I was just checking my email and noticed your story....what a GREAT success Story...I am so Happy for you! However, I have a question...if you dont mind.
ReplyDeleteWhy do you think a person who desires ALL THEIR LIFE TO LOOSE WEIGHT...can start a program but NEVER SEE IT THRU TO THE END OR THE GOAL THEY SET OUT??? This has been my ONGOING LOT FOR YEARS....ITS NOT 1 day that goes by that I dont think of HOW I can loose weight....sad to say it has Made me inwardly very Unhappy! Most would never know since I am someone who is always trying to bring Sunshine to someone else's Life.....sorry for being so Long-winded....but if you have any idea OR could offer me a suggestion....I would SINCERLY, GREATLY, APPRECIATE IT TREMENDOUSLY!!! :) :)
Thank you in advance for taking time to give me your Opinion! (smile) I do wish you Many years of happiness with your Son and Marriage....keep up the good work!
I also agree with the WOW and great story Kim. I love the web site and the workout section is a big help. I wish you would add a section of a daily eating plan and post what you eat daily. I have a problem not knowing what to eat. Great Job and you look wonderful
ReplyDeleteI love your blog. Very inspiring!
ReplyDeleteKim, Congratulations on your success! I also saw this on the yahoo home page while checking my email. I have already marked this site as a favorite and will be checking here often. I am in desperate need of losing weight and have been working at it for a year, however my success is not fantastic, have only lost about 30 pounds. I am sticking to a better diet now out of desparation because my body is literally giving out. I am 5'2", 56 years old, and weighed in a couple days ago at 366. I am not physically able to get out and walk but do have a membership at a wellness center to walk in the pool. I am diabetic, have fibromyalgia, arthritis, and asthmatic. I really hate defining myself with those terms. I want to live, am scared to death of dying and yet I still need to get to a better place of mind so I do go to that pool. Can you give me some inspirational advice?

Wow Kim! I am totaly impressed. As a result of that, I am headed for my jogging shoes! Teamed up with a friend as I do not usually do well on my own (that was before I read this) but she seems too busy for the healthy year! We plan to participate in the annual marathon that takes place towards end of Nov. I have my personal ambitions. Just want to look good, dress up in smart clothes (difficult to get smart clothes when you a plus size where I live). Will write more next time... I guess tommorrow! Will be checking on this website very often. I am totaly impressed!
ReplyDeleteKim I am so glad that I came across your blog!!!! You are such a motivation!! My Grandmother lives in Corona, In and when I saw that you were from Fort Wayne I just had to vist your site and I am so glad that I did!!! Keep up the hard work and I will be reading you blog from now on. I have fought the battle of weight for a long time and need to lose about 100 pounds. But most of all I want to be healthy for my two daughters, I know they need me to be!

Hi Kim, reading many of the comments, it is very apparent that you have touched a lot of people with your story. I, too, am a life-long "weight warrior." After drastically altering my eating and physical activity habits 18 years ago, I have more or less successfully maintained a 100 pound weight loss. The experience drove me back to school to complete a degree in nutrition and become a Registered Dietitian. There have been times of weight re-gain, due to the pain from damage inflicted by my weight on my joints (especially lower back) periodically curtailing my activity level. Happy to report that Pilates reformer and re-engaging in mindful eating have helped me get back down to my goal weight and reduce pain so I can increase activity again. Happier and healthier than I was 20 years ago, and I plan to keep going. It is a lifelong effort, but so worth it! Don't get too discouraged when there are momentary "blips" in your progress, just keep on keeping on! Cheers to you and your lovely family, and thanks for sharing your story - Melodee R.D. in So Cal
ReplyDeleteI am a 53 year old woman diagnosed with aortic valve stenosis. I had started a walking program before I was diagnosed, then told by my doctor that I had to be careful with what I did-no exertion, etc. That threw me. I had wanted to get healthier, loose weight, but then I felt depressed. Reading about you has been an inspiration. Now, I will begin again. Facing open heart surgery is scary stuff, but I feel I can face this if I am at my best physically and emotionally. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteIs there any advice you can give on how to approach a loved one that is morbidly obese? My sister in law is young, unmarried and weighs almost 300 lbs. I would love to see her happy, yet she is convinced she can be healthy and that big at the same time. I just want her to have all the things that she wants like a chance to get married and have children. Any advice?
ReplyDeleteWow Kim, you are AMAZING, and what a great story you have!! From the sounds of these posts you have really hit home with a lot of us. I too saw your story on Yahoo and could not resist looking up your blog, I love that you are so willing to share your daily up's & downs it makes me want to try harder. I know what I need to do, I even get started & stick with it and start to loose the weight, but then something happens and I have a very hard time staying motivated. Do you have any suggestions for keeping motivated? Thanks for sharing I hope that one day I can share my success story with others also. I would love to hear any advice you might have, thank you in advance! Lori In Utah.
ReplyDeleteI just found your blog and it brought me to tears! I also, lost my mother in December 2009. I used food as my comfort and so did my mom. I made a decision last month that I would change for the better. So far, I've lost 13 pounds! I don't have too much to lose but I don't want my weight to get too out of hand. I want to be healthy again....and I want to start taking care of myself. Thank you so much for the inspiration! God bless!
ReplyDeleteYou don't have your email linked up to your blogger profile so I couldn't respond to your comment on my blog, but if you wanted to send me "inspiration" pics of what you would like or something along those lines, and include colors to use I will totally paint you up something for the little man's room. :) Shoot me an email and we'll discuss more: redheadrunning@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteJust found your blog and love it! Can't wait to read more:)
