Three Things Thursday: All apologies

1. I am sorry to say … but today’s run was the worst pregnant run to date. It was my slowest, with my pace creeping above the 12-minute mark. It was 12:02 to be exact, and about 45 seconds slower than any run recently recorded. My pace, though, wasn’t why it went awry. It was these cramps or muscle strains or … well, it was pain. I ran the first 1.5 miles, took a walk break of 0.15, ran the next 0.35 and felt a little off and then walked another 0.1. And then it was wretched. Absolutely wretched. I felt like my groin muscles were going to rip to pieces. So I walked again, listening to my body. After a decent rest, I gave it a go again – SLOWLY – and felt better. I was even able to finish strong though that’s kind of a joke these days.

It was just a bit disconcerting to feel such discomfort as I haven’t had much of that at all and definitely not to that degree. I am hoping it’s a one-time thing as I’m not sure what I’ll do otherwise. I don’t feel “done” with running yet. I just don’t.

2. I am sorry to say … that I may be reconsidering Chicago 2012. Don’t worry, though – I’m not giving up my marathon dreams. At Ladies Night at the running company, I was chatting with the ever awesome Casey about post-preggo running and how I considered a spring marathon but definitely didn’t want to do the Flying Pig with its challenging (but doable) climb around mile 6 in the race. He mentioned St. Louis and Grand Rapids, which sent me on a search of May/June races. And that’s where I found the Sunburst Marathon. It’s in early June, close to home and albeit being an established race it is far smaller than both Chicago and Cincinnati. For those marathoners out there, do you prefer HUGE races or a more moderate-sized group? Advice for a first marathon?

3. I am sorry to say … that Denali ate something in the yard today, and I don’t know what it was. I’m actually afraid to know what it was. My suspicion was that it was a small, dead something. And I’m sorry that’s all I could think for a No. 3. So here’s my challenge: Ask me a question. Any question. Any topic – running, pregnancy, Denali, running with Denali, Mark, weight loss, eating. Whatev.

  1. I just did a 4 things Thursday and then saw your post!

    I did Sunburst in 2010 and found it miserable, but that's because it was really hot and humid. Course-wise it's not bad and it was organized well and a fun race in general. But with early June in Indiana it's really kind of a toss-up as to what kind of weather you'll get - could be nice and springy or it could be really hot and humid... so just keep that in mind?

  3. My 2 cents: be careful!!!! you don't want to end up in pre-term labor (like me at 33 weeks). its no fun. I vote to take it easy. BUT I trust you to continue to listen to your body and do what you feel comfortable with. xoxox

  6. At the end of my pregnancies I often had groin pain (and I WASN'T running). It's likely to start becoming uncomfortable soon...just keep listening to yourself and you'll be fine. And you will probably have good days and bad days, depending on what baby is smooshing at any given time.

    I vote big for a first marathon, only because I am slow. Those last miles are tough, and it was really nice to never feel ALONE on the course. A speedier runner may have a different outlook though...

  9. I like a flat first marathon! I did a medium sized on for my first and it was great. The nice thing about a big one for your first is that there is extra hype and a bigger expo!

  10. I've only done big marathons, but I have done a few small halves. I vote for a big first marathon just because you have crowd and race support the entire way. It makes all the difference in those last few miles to have people there to cheer for you.
