Three Things Thursday

Pre-workout eats: Eggnog oats
Workout: Ran 6.03 miles; average pace, 9:13.

1. I got out there. I got out there and ran. Even though I was afraid the lazy Kimberly who has taken over my body this week would find an excuse not to go. I did. And I feel better for it. So much so that my grandma even noticed a change in my voice when I called her for a morning chat. I believe she said that I sounded chipper. That dern lady knows everything!

2. I made the most unbelievable oats this morning, or at least the best oats I've made in a long while. Eggnog oats, obviously made with eggnog - my new favorite flavor. (Please don't ask me about the eggnog shake at Steak 'n' Shake. Just don't.)

For a small pre-workout batch, dump into a small saucepan:

1/4 cup old-fashioned oats
1/3 cup low-fat eggnog or Silk Nog
2/3 cup water
1/2 ripe banana
A shake-shake-shake of cinnamon
A shake-shake of nutmeg

Cook the concoction over medium to medium-high heat until it begins to bubble. Reduce heat and cook until the oats reach desired consistency. Add sweetener to taste and enjoy.

3. The McDonald's cheeseburger. Oh, how I've loved thee. Even as a wee tot, I had quite the affinity for the sliver of meat-pickles-onion-ketchup-mustard combo. I remember (clearly, even in my old age) throwing a tantrum in the kitchen of our apartment, begging my mom for a McDonald's cheeseburger. She, of course, being a doting mom, said no and offered to make me one. It wouldn't be the same, I told her. It would just be meat, pickles, onion, ketchup and mustard - not the sliver of meat-pickles-onion-ketchup-mustard combo. I wouldn't like it, I told her. And I didn't. Not even after I accidentally took a sip of her rum and Coke.

I'm sure you are asking yourself: Why are you telling me this? Well, because I told everyone this story this week after hearing about a new lawsuit filed against McDonald's. A mother is suing the chain, arguing that the company's advertising aimed at children is unacceptable. Such ads have made it impossible for the mother to refuse her children McDonald's. She just can't tell them no. Once there, she finds there are no healthy options for her brood.

While I am no expert on the marketing tactic, I have to say that it's a bit ridiculous that a parent can't tell a child no. My mom was obviously able to tell me no. In fact, I heard it a lot. And, dare I be on the side of the fast food chain, a tot could get a 4-piece nugget, apples (no dipping sauce) and a 1% milk for 320 calories. The meal might not be grilled chicken, broccoli and skim milk but it's a decent option - protein, fruit and dairy.

What are your thoughts?

Bonus: Anyone catch Martha Stewart on "Today," ummm, yesterday. She looked like a tranny very festive while showing me how to make awesome holiday decor out of very sparkly things.

  1. I'm with the fast food chain on the McDonald's argument. You're the parent, say no to your child, that's called parenting. It's marketing's job to make the kids say "Mommy I want that" and the parents job to decided if they're kid should or shouldn't have whatever is being advertised and enforce that! People are crazy haha and on another note, I'm the only person in the world who doesn't like eggnog :( I see so many great recipes for it, but something about the flavor of eggnog I just can't get past!

  2. I can not believe that about the woman. If my parents told me no then no it was. People are way to sure happy these day. Oh, and I love their cheeseburgers!

  3. I love the little cheeseburgers. However now that I am an adult I'm perfectly addicted :/. If offered I would eat 1 a day.

That said, I gave up fastfood for a year. It is HARD. Likely because when I was little it is a treat to go eat fastfood.

Parents should learn to say no - Once they start asking you know that there's a problem.

  4. Are you seriously going to drop us 2 different starts to a story but not finish them? You can't do us like that. . . totally gotta know the "rest of the story". First, w'uz up with the shake? Second, "accidental" sip of your mom's rum and coke???
Great post - love it when you mention your grandma.
So happy you made it out for a run.

  5. @Lisa - Ha! I thought it was Coke, and I took a sip before she could stop me. Needless, to say I didn't like it (still don't). And that shake ... AMAZING.

  6. Those oats sound awesome!

Also, my children never get the option to eat fast food and they know that if they ask I'll say absolutely not. Therefore, we don't have a problem. They don't ask. ;)
