Global Running Day: 4 ways to celebrate with your kids

Today is National Running Day. Wait. Scratch that. Today is Global Running Day.

Global Running Day is a day "for people around the world to celebrate the joys of running."

It's a day to honor why you run.

It's a day to share with those you run with.

It's a chance to reignite your passion for the sport.

And, it's a chance to inspire a similar passion in others.

As a mother runner to two gorgeous boys, my goal today – Global Running Day – is to do all of that not just for them but with them.

Both Miles and Silas have been a part of my running since they were born. Actually, before as I was able to run for the majority of my pregnancies. Once they exhibited good head control, they were strapped into the car seat and I pushed them in the BOB Ironman thanks to an adapter. As they got older, I ditched the adapter and used the five-point harness. Si has even accompanied me for a race – a Girls on the Run 5K last May.

Of the two, though, Miles is my running buddy. I pushed him in the stroller as I trained for my first 26.2, the 2012 Columbus Marathon, and for a number of other events. He's been on short runs and long runs, logging hundreds of miles on those three wheels. He's begged to go on the run, dared me to farther, urged me to go faster and relentlessly requested to go up bigger and bigger hills.

Now that he's getting older (he'll turn 5 in July), he's not just content to sit back and watch me pound the pavement. He wants to hop out and go for it, too. It's a joy to see him become interested in the sport that is more than something that I do but something I am.

And because he's had a hand in helping me become the runner I am, I would be remiss not to celebrate Global Running Day with him.

Here are ways you, too, can celebrate the day with your children.

Make time. Planning a run can be challenging when you are contending with work schedules, spouses, other children and life commitments. On this day, instead of finding time to run when it's most convenient for you, create an opportunity for your child to join you. Maybe it's a quick run around the block while dinner finishes up in the oven (assuming someone else is in the house) or after eating while your spouse so kindly cleans up.

Sign up for a race. I once lamented that there just weren't enough running events that were family-friendly in my area. There were plenty of 5Ks but very, very few had shorter sprints and dashes for the children. I'm happy to report that things are changing here. Log onto your local running club's website and look for races that have kids miles or are stroller-friendly. Be sure to take into consideration whether the race has family-friendly activities after your runner finishes and if medals are handed out. Ask your budding runner which race he would like to do and sign him up. I'm eyeing the Taste of the Arts 4-Mile Run,which has a free (!!!) kids mile.

The chase is on. Children might not find the same satisfaction as you while running through the neighborhood or in a race. And that's OK. However, that doesn't mean they can't run with you. Play a game of tag in the backyard, set up an obstacle course or organize a neighborhood dash with his friends. Remember, running at this age should be about fun more than fitness.

Put a shoe on it. Kids are hard on shoes. I lament that I can buy Miles a new pair of sneakers and the soles will be worn thin within 6 weeks. While those shoes are just fine for play, consider getting your little running buddy fitted for his own pair of shoes. My favorite local running store carries kids sizes from reputable running brands such as New Balance. Getting him a dedicated pair of running shoes, just like you, can help keep him excited about running. Miles recently got a pair of New Balance Vazee Rush, which he has deemed comfortable and super cool (though not as cool as his Highlights Tote). The shoe features "all the technology aspiring athletes need, and nothing they don't, this shoe accommodates their growing need for speed."

And if Miles is any indication, there's plenty of speed in those feet.

Happy running day!

Disclosure: Miles and I each received a pair of New Balance Vazee shoes in honor of running day but I was not compensated or asked to write this post. All opinions are my own – including that it is of the utmost importance to not only display an active lifestyle but to encourage one.

National Running Day: Beyond reason

I am a runner, and National Running Day is my holiday.

It is your holiday, too. And yours, and yours and yours.

National Running Day isn't just a day where we celebrate what we, as individuals, do and why we do it but a celebration of the community and camaraderie that has brought us all to this place. A place where pace, ability and motivation aren't important. The place, the starting line, matters only in a shared passion for sport, health and challenge.

On this day, many like to share why they run - giving an overarching, grand reason that digs from the sole to the soul. The reasons are good, great even, but I often find it hard to articulate what brings me to lace up my shoes each day. Today, at 8:05 a.m., I might have said "I run ... because World War III is about to be ignited over sneakers vs. sandals." My mother runners out there are sure to understand. Other days, according to my Twitter feed, the reason might be more superficial - to take in copious amounts of Salted Caramel Gu with good reason

The real answer, one that seems to fall short in my mind, is I run ... because I do. I run because this is the path I chose for myself.

I run ... because there's no way on God's green Earth that I'm doing Zumba regularly.

And so, this morning, I laced up my new Saucony Fastwitch, dropped off a frustrated Miles at daycare ("I requested sandals!") and hit the trail for a workout that made my knees shake before pressing start on my Garmin. I didn't think of much during those 6 miles beyond what paces I needed to hit and how I was breathing.

I ran smart, I ran strong and I ran with my heart. Because it is what I do.

Time to celebrate!

Competitor Group discounts. Like the Rock 'n' Roll race series? Today is the day to register. The group is offering:
  • $20 off domestic Rock ‘n’ Roll full, half, relay & bike
  • $5 off 5k, 10k, Mini o €5 off Int’l RNR
  • $5 off Carlsbad 5000
  • $20 off Women’s Running Series
  • $20 off TriRock (excluding Nations)

Gear check. While not specifically for race day, Pro Compression is having a pretty rad sale - 50 percent off your order when you purchase two or more items. Y'all know I'm a fan (it's why I'm an ambassador), and I'm loving the low trainer socks for summer running. They hug my feet without making me sweat. Use the code JUNE to order.

Stay hydrated. Nuun is having a photo contest on its Facebook page. Snap a photo of you in action on a run today and post it in the comments section of the post to enter to win a runner's hydration pack (2 tubes and a bottle). You can also save 20 percent on your order using code NATIONALRUNNINGDAY.

Locked and loaded. I'm a big fan of Lock Laces - and not just for running, either. I've used them for Miles' sneakers because that kid will untie those sneakers he doesn't want to wear and chuck them at you. Use code RUNDAY to save 40 percent on a build-your-own three pack and the reflective three-pack (good for those 5:15 a.m. run dates).

Celebrate good times

It's a sad day as a runner when you realize that you only have one pair of usable shoes.

For the better part of six months, I alternated between two pairs - Nike Structure Triax and Nike Lunar Flys - in addition to a few old pair of Triax that I could throw in the mix if I was on the treadmill and forgot to bring my shoes to the basement. Since ditching the Triax in April, I've been rocking the Brooks Ravennas exclusively.

I do have some miles remaining on the Lunar Flys but I have a sinking suspicion that the lighter pair of sneaks are related to some IT tenderness I was experiencing after Run the Bluegrass in March. No bueno.

And though I laced up the Ravennas yesterday for a short 3-miler, I slipped them on again this morning for 5 miles on June 5 in honor of National Running Day.

The run was pleasant. The oppressive humidity that hung in the air for the past two weeks has dissipated and the sun is beginning to rise just a bit earlier, with the light peaking out over the horizon before I finish. It's cool and bright, a rare combination. I took an out-and-back route that keeps me from bailing before 5, and I was able to catch one of the last whiffs of the lilac bushes for the season.

The gratuitous watch shot is not nearly as cute with the Motoactv as it is with a Garmin model. Womp, womp.

My legs were a bit sore from yesterday's double (or triple if you count the a.m. 3-miler) - teaching Piloxing and BODYPUMP last night - but the pace felt nice  and my body thanked me for moving. It was a run that made me glad I do it. Reminded me of why.

According to a Brooks Running survey, runners participate in the sport for exercise, enjoyment, health and mental health (in that order). I'd probably put mental health a little higher, especially after having such a clear head this morning.

The survey also said 57 percent of runners buy two or more pairs of shoes a year and since I'm only at one six months in, I think I have earned a new pair. For alternating sake, at the least.

Happy National Running Day! How did you celebrate?

Ready to Rock? The Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Series is offering the biggest discount of the year with $20 off any race in the series domestically today only in celebration of National Running Day. Join the ranks of Will Ferrell, Sheryl Crow, Bachelor Sean Lowe, James Marsden, Jennifer Love Hewitt and others who have participated in the races. I stood next to Guiliana Rancic and totally talked to her when I did RnR Chicago and got to split 13.1 with my BFF in New Orleans.

Taking a holiday

I bragged. The universe laughed.

After sharing with you our new bed time routine and excitedly saying that Miles was sleeping later, I was woken up by a distinct conversation.

"Dog, og, dog, gog," Miles repeated from the confines of his crib at the pre-dawn hour of 5 a.m.

Five. In. The. A.M.

I laid in bed for a few minutes hoping that he would talk himself back to sleep but the longer I waited, the more he talked and I realized that we were going to be up. All of us. I wiped the sleep from eyes, staggered from the bed and scooped up my smiling son. We trotted downstairs for a bottle and coffee as I searched to see the upside in all of this.

This ungodly hour that I hadn't seen in some time. And I found it, of all places, in the blogosphere.

Multitasking on the Kindle as I fed Miles, I saw Another Mother Runner's post that today is National Running Day. National Running Day. Like, my favorite holiday. Except the ones where people bestow gifts upon me.

While I could have easily cursed the universe for setting me up for a bad run (read: I was effing tired), I embraced the hour. Getting up early meant that I could leave with the boys earlier and maybe log a decent, distance-wise, run. I wouldn't have to rush. I could soak in the miles.

And I did.

We left the house at 6:30 a.m. and ran through the early-morning fog, marveling that we could see our breath on this June morning We wound through the park and then again, waving to walkers, cyclists and runners alike, as we moved at a comfortable clip. I had worried that I would feel tired from getting up early+BODYPUMP last night but it almost felt effortless for the 5.27 miles. Like me and this run were meant to be.

Now, I have to admit that part of this fantastic attitude was not some "Let's go get 'em, National Running Day" mantra but, in large part, due to my hope that Miles would nap on the run and I could come home to shower in peace. Anyone want to guess how that turned out?

Alas, sometimes you don't get what you want but get what you need.

How are you celebrating National Running Day?
